Overview
The Nikolske Settlement Territorial Community is currently relocated, as its entire territory remains occupied. As of February 24, 2022, the community had a population of 16,999, including 1,266 registered internally displaced persons. The Nikolske Settlement Council now operates from a rented building in Kyiv, where it is establishing a hub and shelter to support residents of Nikolske and other communities from the Mariupol district in Donetsk region. The community is actively seeking partners and funding sources to drive development and respond proactively to evolving challenges and needs.
Brief Description of the Project / Technology / Other Specifics
A multi-purpose support hub, “Heart of the East,” is being established to support internally displaced citizens of the Mariupol district and residents of the Nikolske Settlement Territorial Community. The goal is to provide high-quality administrative, humanitarian, cultural, medical, and rehabilitative assistance, including psychological support and aid for veterans transitioning back to civilian life to mitigate the effects of post-traumatic stress. This initiative aims to offer residents a strong sense of social security. Current facilities include a children’s room, medical office, museum, library, and volunteer space—all created by the Settlement Council workers, dedicated to serving the community's needs. The hub spans 191 square meters and serves 1,266 internally displaced persons (IDPs), with a goal to eventually support up to 20,000 individuals and expand this model nationwide.
Advantages of the Project
- Providing centralized access to essential services, streamlining residents' access to vital resources, and reducing the time and travel needed for support.
- Offering stable and secure support for displaced residents, ensuring continuity of care and assistance for those temporarily without homes.
- Addressing veteran reintegration needs by offering mental health support to ease their transition and reduce post-traumatic stress.
- Fostering community cohesion by creating a supportive network that enhances unity and a sense of belonging for residents far from home.
- Laying the groundwork for future development, opening doors to new partnerships, funding opportunities, and expanded services.
- Building social stability by ensuring residents feel supported, safe, and connected to essential services, even in challenging times.
